Nurse Lynn’s Response:

  • *The Nexus Jump Start Program in Texas is designed for children, adolescents, and young adults with PWS and weight-related issues. According to Nexus, the typical age range admitted is from about 7 up to 21 years oldIndividuals older than 21 are not routinely admitted under standard criteria, but in some cases, Nexus may consider them on a case-by-case basis depending on clinical need and insurance arrangements.

Adults with Prader-Willi syndrome tend to do best with weight management when support comes from a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach rather than diet changes alone. Working with a dietitian who has experience with PWS is especially important, since people with PWS have lower calorie needs and different metabolic profiles than the general population. An endocrinologist can also play a key role by monitoring growth hormone status, thyroid function, and other hormonal factors that affect weight, energy, and body composition. Just as important is having strong daily structure and food security in place, including planned meals and snacks, consistent routines, and limited access to unplanned food. These supports help reduce anxiety around eating and prevent impulsive food-seeking behaviors. Behavioral support and individualized physical activity programs are also essential, as they can build motivation, improve emotional regulation, and promote healthy movement in ways that are realistic and sustainable.
