Ask Nurse Lynn: Females with PWS and Fertility

Question:

Female, 40 years old, deletion subtype

Can a woman with PWS have a baby?

Nurse Lynn’s Response:

Most women with PWS cannot have babies because their bodies don’t make enough of the hormones needed for regular periods and pregnancy. But there have been a few rare cases where women with PWS have gotten pregnant and had babies. If this happens, the pregnancy can be risky because women with PWS often have health problems like weak muscles, trouble breathing, diabetes, or weight issues. Doctors would need to watch the pregnancy very closely. There is also a chance that the baby could be born with PWS, depending on the type of genetic change the mother has. Because of this, women with PWS and their families should talk to doctors and genetic counselors if pregnancy ever becomes a possibility.
