The Power of Lived Experience: Reflections from Our Adults with PWS Advisory Board Meeting

contributed by PWSA | USE CEO Stacy Ward

One of the things I love most about PWSA | USA is that we never lose sight of who we’re here to serve.

That was on full display recently when members of our Adults with PWS Advisory Board gathered in Savannah for an in-person meeting focused on sharing ideas, providing feedback, building connections, and helping shape the future of our organization. The meeting included discussions on the board’s purpose, priorities for adults with PWS, future programming, advocacy needs, and resources that would be most meaningful to adults and families.

As CEO, I spend a lot of time talking about the importance of listening to our community. This group reminds me why that matters so much.

These incredible self-advocates bring something no report, survey, or research study can provide: lived experience.

Throughout the day, board members shared honest perspectives about what is working well, where challenges still exist, and what adults with PWS need most as they navigate life, relationships, health care, employment, housing, community involvement, and independence. Their feedback helps ensure that the work we do at PWSA | USA is grounded in the real experiences of the people who live with PWS every day.

The board also spent time reviewing future programming and providing input on content and topics that are important to adults with PWS. Their voices help guide our priorities and ensure that the programs we develop are relevant, meaningful, and responsive to the needs of our community.

One of the most meaningful parts of the meeting was watching board members confidently share their experiences and perspectives with others. For many years, people with disabilities have too often had decisions made about them rather than with them. The Adults with PWS Advisory Board helps change that. Their voices aren’t just welcomed, they’re essential. They help us think differently, challenge our assumptions, and keep us focused on what matters most.

Of course, it wasn’t all work.

There was a lot of laughter throughout the weekend. We shared meals, caught up with old friends, welcomed newer members into the group, and enjoyed time together outside of the formal discussions. A friendly game of bingo brought plenty of smiles and reminded us that some of the strongest connections are built during the moments between meetings.

What always strikes me after gatherings like this is how much talent, wisdom, humor, and compassion exists within our PWS community. These board members are advocates, mentors, leaders, and role models. They are helping shape the future not only of PWSA | USA, but of what self-advocacy looks like within the PWS community.

I left Savannah feeling incredibly grateful. Grateful for the honesty that was shared. Grateful for the trust these individuals place in us. Grateful for the friendships that continue to grow. And grateful that we have a group of passionate adults with PWS willing to use their voices to help build a stronger future for everyone affected by PWS.

To our Adults with PWS Advisory Board members: thank you. Thank you for showing up, speaking up, and helping lead the way. PWSA | USA is better because of you, and our community is stronger because your voices are being heard.
