The Importance of PWS Awareness Day

Why is it important to have an awareness day?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines awareness as the quality or state of being aware: knowledge and understanding that something is happening or exists. So, quite simply, the reason we celebrate PWS Awareness Month and PWS Awareness Day, is because we need people to know that Prader-Willi syndrome exists.

Greater awareness and understanding of PWS help people provide the support our loved ones need to thrive. Increased knowledge also helps researchers better understand the causes of symptoms and explore treatment options, while enabling doctors to connect symptoms to a clear diagnosis and provide appropriate care and interventions. Awareness gives our loved ones answers about why they may be struggling and helps them see the bigger picture of their diagnosis, their community, and their own strengths. We celebrate PWS Awareness Day to promote knowledge, understanding, advocacy, and support for the people we love with PWS.

A few years ago, thanks to the incredible work of PWS advocates, U.S. Congressman Paul D. Tonko (D-NY) and Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) filed a joint resolution declaring May 15, 2023, and every May 15th thereafter, Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) Awareness Day in the United States of America! Prader-Willi syndrome may not be the most known syndrome, but being nationally recognized every year is a huge step toward gaining awareness for families in all corners of our society.

How can you spread awareness?

There are many ways to spread awareness about PWS. Some people share information with close friends and family, while others advocate in their communities, speak at large events, or create podcasts. No act is too small, every effort matters, and people have found many creative ways to raise awareness. Below are a few common ideas:

  1. -Invite some friends over for coffee and tell them about your loved one.
  2. -Speak in your child’s classroom, school, or group home.
  3. -Share your story on social media.
  4. -Contact your local news station and ask to write an article or be interviewed about PWS Awareness Day.
  5. -Write a letter to your family telling them about your loved one with PWS.
  6. -Share our PWS United podcast with your friends.
  7. -Ask your city or state to make a proclamation recognizing PWS Awareness Day. (See our Proclamation Toolkit HERE.)

We celebrate PWS Awareness Day to honor individuals living with PWS. We strive to build a community in which individuals with PWS are empowered and every family feels safe and comfortable sharing about their loved one’s life and diagnosis so they can receive the necessary support. Whether you recognize this day on a social media platform, a public stage, or in the comfort of your home, we encourage you all to celebrate your loved one, recognize the struggles they face living with PWS, share with your community how they can help support your loved one and your family, honor the ways PWS makes your loved one special, remind them it is only a part of who they are and not everything, and let your people know that we love and support our individuals with PWS!

Happy PWS Awareness Day!
