PWSA | USA Board of Directors Member Spotlight: John Lens

Board of Directors Member: John Lens
Years on the Board: 4+

What first connected you to the Prader-Willi syndrome community, and what inspired you to join the PWSA | USA Board of Directors?

My son Hunter, who is now 27 years old, was born with Prader-Willi. I am fortunate in life to understand the importance of helping others and provide assistance where I can from my own life lessons learned.

What do you find most meaningful about serving on the Board, and what excites you most about the work ahead?

Helping new families understand that life is going to be okay with a new diagnosis of a family member who has Prader-Willi. What excites me is our ability to transform lives through new ideas and research that can improve quality of life for those affected by PWS.

Please share a bit about your professional background and how it supports your role on the Board.

I have worked in high tech software sales for over 30 years, which has provided me with the training and understanding on how to collaborate with other leaders to drive innovation and change.

Outside of your Board work, how do you enjoy spending your free time?

As much time as I can, I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my amazing wife Lori and our three children (Hunter 27, Hayden 24 and Abigail 22).

Where do you currently live, and what do you enjoy most about your community?

I live in Lakeville, Massachusetts, and have our home on Long Pond, which is the largest recreational water source in MA. During the warmer months, you will find me on my boat during the weekends relaxing and socializing with other families on the pond.

Please tell us a little about your family or the people who are most important in your life.

I’ve been married for 30 years to my lovely wife, Lori. We have 3 amazing children, with Hunter being my oldest who is thriving with PWS. My middle son lives in Boston and is currently an ICU nurse for Boston Medical and will be running the Boston marathon in the spring. My daughter Abbey just finished college and is looking to start her career in arts and crafts.

What inspires or motivates you – personally or professionally?

Hunter inspires me each and every day. If I am having a hard day at work or just in general, I just need to think about my son, and it is amazing how my opinion and attitude changes. I am truly blessed to have a son who has changed me personally for the better!

Share one fun or unexpected fact about yourself.

I do not seek to find poison ivy, but poison ivy seeks to find me, and every year I am good to get itchy 2-3 times a year!

What is your hope for the future of PWSA | USA and the PWS community?

That children can live long healthy lives and the hunger pain can be completely eliminated. I am blessed that currently my son does not need to live in a group home and I help other family members can have the same option.
