PWSA | USA Board of Directors Member Spotlight: Michelle Torbert

Board of Directors Member: Michelle Torbert
Board Role: Member
Years on the Board: 16

What first connected you to the Prader-Willi syndrome community, and what inspired you to join the PWSA | USA Board of Directors?

The birth of my daughter Leslie, 28 years ago, connected me to the PWS community. I wanted to join the board to be able to find ways to help my daughter and other families affected by PWS.

What do you find most meaningful about serving on the Board, and what excites you most about the work ahead?

I have seen many changes over the years that I have served on the board and feel we have accomplished many great things to help our families. I love helping to come up with ideas and projects that help our families.

Please share a bit about your professional background and how it supports your role on the Board.

I was a police officer for 9 years prior to starting my family. My husband Tommy and I started ‘Torbert Trucking’ and ‘Torbert Produce’ and have owned these and several other businesses for almost 40 years. I have served on many not-for-profit boards and have been successful in fundraising. I put on a fundraiser called ‘Casting for a Cause’ for 9 years, which raised over a million dollars for PWSA | USA and Prader-Willi Florida Association (PWFA). I feel these accomplishments will provide leadership and fundraising to the Board.

Outside of your Board work, how do you enjoy spending your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time enjoying my 6 grandchildren (soon to be 8), traveling with family and friends and reading. I also love spending time with our PWFA families.

Where do you currently live, and what do you enjoy most about your community?

I love in Homestead, FL, and enjoy the access to the Florida Keys and the weather.

Please tell us a little about your family or the people who are most important in your life.

My husband Tommy and I have been married for almost 40 years and have 4 sons and our princess Leslie, who is 28 with PWS. We are a very close family and do many things together. All of our boys work in different positions in the family business, which can be difficult planning vacations together. We have 6 grandchildren (soon to be 8) that are the joys of our lives.

What inspires or motivates you – personally or professionally?

My strong faith and love of life and my family is what motivates me both personally and professionally.

Share one fun or unexpected fact about yourself.

Most people are surprised to hear I was the 1st Female Sgt. for the City of Homestead Police Dept.

What is your hope for the future of PWSA | USA and the PWS community?

I hope the organization continues to grow and find ways to help our families affected by PWS.
