Diving in to Volunteering

We at PWSA | USA are incredibly grateful to our volunteers. These wonderful volunteers show up in a variety of capacities to help us carry out our mission to “enhance the quality of life of and empower those affected by Prader-Willi syndrome.” Some are older parents well-versed in the intricacies of the PWS community. Some are newer parents willing to dive into the pool of fundraising and awareness. One such recent volunteer is Lorelei Benninghoff, mom to Nora, 3, living with PWS.

Lorelei chose to help bring awareness to PWS through her passion and talent for swimming. She created her first event, the Mermaid Marathon to take place during February for Rare Disease Awareness Month.

She had this to say about the event, “a mom of a child with PWS, this swim is deeply personal. Every lap represents the love, resilience, and determination it takes to raise a child with a rare disease—and the hope that no family has to face it alone. Throughout February, I’ll be swimming lap after lap to support the families, advocacy, education, research, and resources PWSA USA provides nationwide. Every lap honors PWS families. Every donation makes a difference. Every share raises awareness. If you’re able, please consider donating via the QR code, cheering me on, or sharing this post. No gift is too small—every donation helps. Thank you for supporting our PWS community and these 1,000 Laps of Love!”

Lorelei worked hard to get her Mermaid Marathon fundraiser up and going to help support her daughter Nora. In her first few days, she raised over $1,000! She is a loving mom who is putting herself out there to get out of her comfort zone for Nora and our PWS community.

Katie Martinez, our fundraising coach, shares this praise for Lorelei: “You’re doing an amazing job Lorelei! I love getting to know you and see all our similarities. I’m so happy to be working with you and discussing new things to try even though they can be scary. You created something that helps to spark others to cheer you on and be active with you! I am so proud of you and Nora is so lucky to have you as her Mama!!”

While Lorelei may be taking a break from her Mermaid Marathon laps, you can still donate to her fundraising page in honor of Nora clicking the button below.
