Ask Nurse Lynn: Vomiting Concerns

Question:

Male, 29 years old, unknown subtype

Is it normal for people with this eat then vomit violently? We don’t know much about this, just that he has it!

Nurse Lynn’s Response:

Violent vomiting is not normal for someone with PWS, and it should always be taken seriously. In fact, people with PWS usually do not vomit easily, even when they are very sick. So, if someone with PWS eats and then suddenly vomits hard or forcefully, this is a big warning sign that something could be wrong. It can be caused by things like severe constipation, food getting stuck, a blockage in the stomach or intestines, infection, or the stomach becoming too full or stretched. Because people with PWS may not feel pain the same way or may not be able to explain how bad they feel, vomiting may be the only sign that there is a serious medical problem. This is not behavioral, and it is not done on purpose. If violent vomiting is happening or keeps happening, this should be treated as an emergency, and the person should be seen right away at urgent care or the emergency room. Be sure to clearly tell the medical team that the person has PWS, because vomiting in PWS is unusual and needs careful evaluation.
