How to Apply and Tips for Working with the Social Security Administration
when Applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- To apply for SSI, visit
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/reach.htm or call 800-772-1213.
- Get to know your caseworker at your local
Social Security office. The local office is the best source for answers
to questions you might have.
- If you call the 800 number for Social
Security, check any information you are given with the local office. The
800 number has been known to relay inaccurate information.
- Provide as much information as possible on
your child’s condition.
- Answer all correspondence from Social
Security promptly. The deadline for responding is based on the postmark
on the letter – not when you receive the letter. If you are going to be
late with a response, contact Social Security and ask for an extension.
- Keep records! In a notebook or some other
place, list every contact you have with Social Security. Include at
least the date of call, who you spoke with, and a summary of what was
discussed.
- If denied, appeal. Contact a PWSA Crisis
Intervention Counselor (800-926-4797) immediately for assistance.
