FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Pirates Manager,
Clint Hurdle, National Spokesperson for the Prader-Willi Syndrome
Association (USA) in Sarasota
November, 17th, 2010 (Sarasota, FL)—On November 15th,
2010 the Pittsburgh Pirates, who play their spring training games in
Bradenton, FL, announced Clint Hurdle as their new manager. This is
good news for the Sarasota-based Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA)
because Hurdle is the organization’s national spokesperson. Hurdle’s
eight year old daughter, Madison, was born with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS)
and Hurdle has been on a mission ever since to spread awareness about
PWS and to raise money for the important support and research programs
of PWSA (USA).
PWSA (USA) Executive Director, Evan Farrar, said, “We are delighted
the Pirates hired Clint not only because he is a great baseball manager
but also because this means he will be here with the Pirates during
spring training in Bradenton which will help us spread PWS awareness
locally.” Farrar added, “Hurdle works tirelessly to promote awareness
of PWS. Every person and family living with PWS celebrates his
accomplishments both on and off the field.”
PWS is a complex genetic syndrome
affecting appetite, growth, metabolism, cognitive function and behavior
and affects one in 12,000 to 15,000 births, including both males and
females and all ethnic groups. Because of an abnormality in the
hypothalamus area of the brain, people with PWS never receive the
message of satiety; they are always hungry. Currently there is no cure
but with early intervention and proper management, most individuals who
have PWS can maintain healthy weights and have a normal life
expectancy.
PWSA (USA) is a national organization of families and professionals
working together to promote and fund research, provide education, and
offer support to enhance the quality of life of those affected by
Prader-Willi syndrome. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization 33 years ago, PWSA (USA) has been based in Sarasota,
Florida since 1997.
